Payment over the phone (MO/TO)

Customers place orders over the phone (MO/TO transactions) and card details are not saved for future payments. MO/TO payments are made by customers who cannot or who hesitate to fill in the card payment form on a website. For example: Orders made in person (e.g. at conferences) received on phone, or tablet wherever you are.

  • What is Best Practice for SCA for me?

MOTO payments are out of scope of SCA. This means payments can process without a need to verify the cardholder with SCA.

In the case of MOTO payments, our advice is simple: Ensure that MOTO payments are properly flagged as MOTO.

By doing so, you notify the Issuer that the payment is MOTO, and so out of scope for SCA - this increases the likelihood that this Issuer will successfully authorise the payment.

  • Which solution do you use?

If you need help identifying your integration type please contact us.

I take payments with Virtual Terminal or the Terminal in the Ecommerce Portal, what do I need to do?

Nothing required - any transactions processed this way are automatically flagged as MOTO.

*You may know this application as RealControl.

I take payments with an in house or a third party application, which is integrated to GP ecom via HPP, what do I need to do?

Ensure that the “CHANNEL” flag in your messaging is set to MOTO.

HPP developer documentation is available here

I take payments with an in house or third party application, which is integrated to GP eCom via API, what do I need to do?

Ensure that the <Channel> flag in your messaging is set to MOTO.

API developer documentation is available here

  • What should I expect from September 2019?

Transactions correctly flagged as MOTO will continue to process as usual.

But you should be aware that transactions not flagged as MOTO will likely be treated as ECOM by default and are at risk of being declined by the Issuers as SCA has not taken place.

  • Who is Liable in the event of a dispute?

Liability for fraud related chargebacks, is transferred to the Card Issuer when SCA has occurred.

Because SCA is not applied to MOTO payments, any liability rests with the Acquirer and/or Merchant. This means any fraud related chargebacks will likely be billed to you.
